Thank You

We would like to thank everyone who helped us at the track at the time of the accident!  For a couple of people with no training in emergency situations, the people around us at the track were a godsend.  From Carl & Mark who stabilized his arm (and instructed us on what was needed), to the one who ran to get the “red bag” from the trailer. From the kids who ran for ice to Kim who helped keep Josh cool and calm.  From the kids and parents watching with concern to the people who thought to get umbrella’s to shade his eyes.  And those who called 911 to get the ambulance there and Steve, Gary, Brett, Travis and Todd (and anyone we may have missed) who took care of our trailer and personal vehicles still at the track and grab my purse for the trip to the hospital.  Even if we did not mention your name, your help was noticed and your presence was felt throughout the ordeal.

We would also like to thank those who came to the hospital to see Josh after racing was through.  The visit’s really helped to raise Josh’s spirits.  He enjoyed hearing what happened at the track after he left.  We also appreciate the tribute during the World Formula race. With a big Thank you to Tyler Burns for his efforts to get it accomplished!

All the phone calls, emails and well wishes and prayers really show what a family we have all become at Mini Indy.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Thank you,

Kevin, Joyce, Michelle and Josh Daugherty

Mini Indy Girls Represented in the Indy Star

Danica “Mania” has brought attention to Mini Indy and quarter midgets. The Indianapolis Star did a race day article that was part of their special edition Indy 500 Race Day coverage about girls with racing ambitions. Their focus was girls racing quarter midgets at Mini Indy.

Mini Indy would like to thank the girls who represented our sport well and also Philip Wilson and Charlie Nye of the Star for doing such a wonder job.

Robbie Stanley Race Rained Out

Unfortunately, due to the weather, we were unable to get the Sunday regional classes run and more importantly the Robbie Stanley Memorial.    Although Sunday was a wash-out,  Saturday went very well.  Even with high gas prices it was an impressive car count of 155 Hondas.    The racing was fast and furious.

I want to thank each and everyone that put in the  time and effort to make this event great.   I especially want to additionally recognize the following folks:

  • Kathy Heil for the awesome task of recreating the program and posters from scratch.

  • Ted Katrakis and IKON Business Solutions for printing all the programs and posters.

  • Melissa Cole, Wanda Johnson and Kim Like for running the Concessions and keeping everyone well nourished.

  • Carla Baber and Denise Thomason for organizing trophy’s and gifts.

  • Kim Like for arranging the Mother Day's Market which kept many handlers and drivers out of the "dog house".

At the wishes of the Stanley family, we are going to reschedule a Heavy AA only full format Robbie Stanley Memorial Race later in the racing year.   Stay tuned for updates.

Novice Training & Practice Schedule

I can't tell you how excited I am about the 2008 Novice Class. I believe we have 25 new, novice drivers ready to get the season underway. We are going to have a ton of fun.

I have a few important messages concerning novice training;

  • Beginning the week of April 7th our "Novice Only" practice sessions will move from Tuesday to Thursday nights between 6-8 PM. The track is closed to all other classes during this time. These practices are not required; however, I encourage you to take advantage of this time whenever possible.

  • We will have a mandatory training session for all novice drivers during our first few events on April 12th, April 19th, and May 3rd. If you plan on participating at these events please plan on coming a little bit early for these training sessions. Senior Novice training will be from 8-8:30 AM and Junior Novice training will be from 8:30-9 AM. Junior Novice participants will need to sign in at the tower prior to their sessions and Senior Novice participants will need to sign in immediately following their session. (This schedule is subject to change. I will keep everyone updated if any changes occur.)

Please don't hesitate to contact me at david@freemanracing.com if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you at the track.

    David Freeman

    Novice Director

Racing in Indiana: Gathering Before the Green Flag

Mini Indy had a display setup at an Indianapolis area museum exhibit. The two day exhibit was called "Racing in Indiana: Gathering Before the Green Flag", held at the Indiana State Museum January 19th and 20th.

Hosted by Mike King, chief announcer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network, "Gathering Before the Green Flag" invited fans to sit behind the wheel of a variety of racing vehicles, from IndyCars, stock cars, go-karts, dragsters and of course quarter midgets. Racing insiders such as Derek Daly, Donald Davidson and other favorite drivers took part in symposium of experts.

Mini Indy had a great looking display and it drew very positive comments.

We had a couple of tables setup with QMA/CIQMA brochures, sign-up sheets, Mini Indy stickers, and running banquet videos from the last couple of years. We had a handful of cars on display with a couple of the bigger cars on the ground for kids to get in. Volunteer handlers and drivers alike were there to answer questions and really help promote our club.

The one comment I heard several times was "I never knew about Mini Indy" or "I never knew about quarter midgets". We certainly are the best kept secret in the racing. This year we are really going to make an effort to make sure the racing community knows who and where we are.  I look for our club to really grow this year.

Special thanks go out to everyone who made this a great event.

Mike King indicated that next year he is looking to put together an additional exhibit to go in conjunction with the Boy Scout Pinewood Derby event that will promote area youth racing organizations. The Pinewood Derby event this year drew 630 derby racers and feature a track that was more than two stories tall and 125 feet long and is the tallest, longest and fastest known track in the 55-year history of the Pinewood Derby.
